Elections commissioner Mahinda Deshapriya said the Elections Commission has done everything possible to urge the government to hold the provincial council elections.
However, he added that the Parliament is adopting a lethargic approach in this regard.
Mr. Deshapriya, speaking at a press briefing today said that he has written to the government over a period of 07 months to hold the elections, but failed to elicit any response.
Responding to journalists, Mr. Deshapriya said that the cabinet must initiate the proceedure of holding the polls by approving the new electoral system.
He also added that the deadline of two months provided to the special committee to submit the review of the delimitation report, has ended today.
