Former Deraniyagala Pradeshiya Sabha Chairman has been sentenced to 24 years in prison over a bribery case by the Colombo High Court today (Jul 5).
Anil Champika Wijesinghe alias 'Atha Kota' had been found guilty of soliciting a bribe of Rs 500,000 in order to issue a Street Line certificate to a person identified as Nayana Thushari.
Wijesinghe had been found guilty of obtaining Rs 400,000 of the total bribe through Sisil Abeywickrema, the second accused in the case. Abeywickrema had pleaded guilty to the offence at the initial stage of the case before court.
The Bribery Commission had filed a court case over the incident.
Wijesinghe had already been sentenced to death after he was found guilty over the murder of an estate worker.
