The Excise Department has reopened the Central Excise Laboratory after a lapse of several years.
The Commissioner General of Excise, Ariyadasa Bodaragama opened the Central Excise Lab in Seeduwa last week.
The laboratory was established according to standards of the excise department to conduct the primary tests required to check the quality of alcohol beverages.
Though earlier the Excise Department had a central excise laboratory, it was nonoperational for a longtime and as a result the Excise Department had to rely on Government Analyst Department and private lab reports to determine the quality of alcoholic beverages.
As more and more samples were sent for testing to the Government Analyst, the reports were delayed, as well as the reports from private laboratories exhibited a variance of standards.
