An illegal attempt in smuggling of 120 kgs of Wallapatta and 120 kgs of Sandalwood that were concealed in a 40 foot refrigerated container containing some perishables was detected by the Customs today, officials said.
The Wallapatta and the Sandalwood stock was packed along with a consignment of tapioca - a starch extracted from the storage roots of the cassava plant, red papaya, king coconut, aravi and pineapple.
The stock was apprehended by Sri Lanka Customs with the help of officers of plant quarantine service who are attached to the Export Facilitation Centre, Orugodawatta.
Goods were intended to be exported to Dubai by an exporter from Colombo 03 area. The value of the goods is more than Rs.12.5 million.
Three persons including the exporter have been taken into custody by the Customs
