The UN, through the Army Headquarters, has distributed compensations to the families of two Sri Lankan military personnel who were killed while on a peacekeeping mission in Mali this year.
Posthumously promoted Major H.W.D Jayawickrama and Sergeant S.S Wijekumara, were killed in an explosion on January 25, while on patrol, in the Keerana area in Mali.
Three Sri Lankan peacekeepers sustained injuries in the incident.
Following negotiations between the Army’s Directorate of Overseas Operations and the UN, an agreement was reached to compensate the families of these fallen personnel, the Army Headquarters said in a statement.
These compensations were distributed in keeping with "UN guidelines and its framework for compensations", the statement added.
Sri Lankan Army Commander Lieutenant General Shavendra Silva, awarded them the compensation and the UN receipts to both families at the Army Headquarters yesterday.
