A female police sergeant has been sentenced to two years of rigorous imprisonment for providing false evidence during a bribery case.
The order was issued by the Colombo High Court judge Gihan Kulatunga when the case was taken up for hearing today (Dec 07).
The lawyer representing the accused had requested for a lenient punishment since her child was facing the G.C.E. Ordinary Level examinations this year.
However, the judge had said that a lenient sentence could not be be imposed for a serious offence of providing false evidence before courts.
The police sergeant has been charged for providing false evidence on behalf of an OIC of the Mawanella police who had obtained a bribe of Rs 2500 from a driver who had breached traffic regulations, instead of filing a case in courts.
