The final rites of OIC Sagara Sarathchandra who passed away on Saturday following a fatal accident on February 24 will be held at 4 pm at the Borella cemetry with full police honours today (March 11).
The victim had died at around 8:50 pm on Saturday while receiving treatment at the Intensive Care Unit of the Colombo National Hospital.
A magisterial inquest on the victim's body was carried out by Fort Magistrate Ranga Dissanayake while the post-mortem examination was conducted by Special Judicial Medical Officer Channa Perera yesterday.
Meanwhile, Traffic DIG Ajith Rohana yesterday confirmed that the chief suspect has been identified as Navindu Ratnayake - the son of a police officer who was driving the defender jeep at the time of the accident.
Mr. Rohana added that CCTV footage was available to prove the chief suspect's involvement in the incident. However, he said that the footage could not be released to the public since the suspect is due to be produced before an identification parade.
The DIG also told the press that suspicion has arisen with regard to the chassi and the engine numbers of the defender jeep. He emphasised that police would take steps to file a case against the owner of the vehicle if there was any tamepring involved with regard to the identification numbers of the vehicle.
