Finance Ministry signs agreement with AFD for Rs 15 b wastewater project

The Finance Ministry today (Feb 18) signed an agreement with the French Agency for Development (AFD) for a Rs 15 billion wastewater disposal project in Ratmalana and Moratuwa.

The agreement was signed between Finance Secretary Dr. R.H.S. Samaratunga and AFD Country Director Martin Parent. French Ambassador for Sri Lanka and the Maldives, Eric Lavertu was witness to the signing.

"The Ratmalana/Moratuwa Wastewater Disposal Project aims at improving access to the sewerage service for 45,000 residents of Ratmalana and Moratuwa" a statement from the Finance Ministry said.

The statement added that the project would see the extension of the sewerage network and more than 10,000 domestic, commercial and industrial connections. Sewage will be treated by the existing Ratmalana wastewater treatment plant.

Information, education and communciation campaigns would be held to create awareness on the benfits of this project.

The project which has been designed by the National Water Supply and Drainage Board (NWSDB) along with the assisstance of an AFD Engineering Consultant, will be carried out by the NWSDB over a period of five to six years.
