The Ministry of Wildlife and Forest Conservation will soon propose to the cabinet to introduce amendments to increase fines for those found guilty of setting up snares for animals.
Minister of Wildlife C.B. Ratnayake said that the current fines are below Rs 50,000 and fines need to be increased in order to protect animals such as leopards.
He said that the jail term also needs to be increased.
Among the proposals are to increase the fine to Rs 250,000 and a jail term of two and half years for such offences.
The cabinet paper is to be presented by end of the month.
