Fire destroys factory in Grandpass, damages houses

A fire which completely burned down factory at Orugodawatta in Grandpass in the early hours of this morning (13) also damaged four nearby houses, police said. The factory where the fire originated produces boxes used to package tea.

Police said the fire was eventually brought under control and doused with the assistance of police, area residents, the Grandpass Fire Brigade and the Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB).

While there were no deaths of injuries due to the fire, the tea factory was completely gutted while four nearby houses sustained minor damage, police said. Neither the cause of the fire nor the extent of its damage has been determined as yet. Investigations are ongoing.
