Over two acres of forest land was destroyed due to a fire which broke out in Talawakelle at around 10:30 am today (Jan 17).
Our area correspondent noted that the extreme heat and heavy winds that were experienced in the area had caused difficulties in dousing the fire.
However, Talawakelle Police, STF and army personnel along with the general public are currently engaging in a valiant effort to contain the fire and prevent it from spreading further.
Area residents have called for the immediate arrest of the individuals who had set fire to the forest. They said that the scarcity of water in the area has been further aggravated due to such acts.
