Fisheries Ministry distributed Rs 5 million per each provincial council from its budgetary allocations for provincial fisheries development at meeting with provincial fisheries ministers at the auditorium of the Fisheries Ministry recently, Ministry said in a statement. The meeting was presided by Minister Mahinda Amaraweera and the provincial fisheries ministers from western, north-western, southern, eastern and central provinces were present to the meeting.
Minister Amaraweera requested all the provincial ministers to support the Ministry in realizing its target to raise the fish export income up to USD 1.5 billion by the year 2020 and to increase the total fish production up to 2% of the GDP.
He said that in order to achieve these targets, aquaculture parks are proposed to be established in 2000 acres in Batticaloa and 3000 acres in Mannar where a crab exports city will be established in Hambantota district.
Taking in to account that provincial councils are granted with a less amount of funds for fisheries form budgetary allocations, Hon Minister offered each provincial council 05 million of funds amounting to 45 million altogether from the funds allocated to the Ministry.
