The Fisheries Ministry has decided to introduce a new mechanism to issue weather warnings for fishing boats which do not leave the shores through a harbour.
State Fisheries Minister Dileep Wedaarachchi said that weather-related advisories would be issued through a recorded call service or an SMS to the owners of these boats.
He explained that this mechanism would be introduced in a bid to prevent individuals from being affected due to rough seas.
Meanwhile, the owners of water jets, boats used for whale watching, and other vessels used for recreational purposes will also be notified through this system.
Mr. Wedaarachchi stated that the Fisheries Ministry has compiled a database of all the phone numbers of these owners in order to provide them with this service.
These warnings would be issued starting from the end of this month.
