Fishermen in Mullaitivu observed that a black substance similar to oil is being washed up on the shores in their district since yesterday (Aug 19).
According to fishermen, the substance has caused the water to turn black between the Nay Aru and Kokilai areas in the district and cannot be easily washed off a person's body.
They said that steps would be taken to inform fisheries authorities and the district secretariats in the area over this matter.
The final rites of veteran broadcaster, writer, and lyricist Nirmala de Alwis will be held today at Peradeniya.
