Five provinces are expected to receive more than 100 mm (four inches) of rainfall today, the Meteorological Department said.
Among them are the Western, North-Western, Northern, Southern and Sabaragamuwa regions.
Today’s weather forecast also predicted showers to occur in various parts of the country after 1 pm.
In addition, rains upto 75mm can be expected in the Central Province and in the Anuradhapura, Ampara, Batticaloa and Badulla districts, the forecast stated.
Meanwhile, naval and fishing communities have been advised to remain vigilant due to rough seas and heavy winds which could be experienced until this afternoon.
The Meteorology Department predicted that heavy winds between 70 to 80 kmph could be experienced in the seas off Puttalam to Kankasanturai through Mannar.
