Former Army Commander Sarath Fonseka, was promoted to the rank of Field Marshal yesterday, by President Maithripala Sirisena.
The rank of Field Marshal is equivalent to the position of a cabinet minister and is the highest rank in the armed forces of the world. A Field Marshal is considered to be an active member in the military service throughout his life.
He was ceremonially elevated to the position of Field Marshal at a ceremony held in Colombo with the participation of President Maithripala Sirisena, Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe and other senior state officials. The event was also attended by Fonseka's family members and his close associates. The former Army Commmander was given a guard of honour by the Army, to pay its respect to the country's first Field Marshal.
