Summons have been issued on former Chief Justice (CJ) Sarath N Silva to be present before the Supreme Court on Feburary 07 over a contempt of court case.
Mr. Silva and the Attorney General who have been named as respondents in the case were issued summons when the case was taken up for hearing before a three-member judge bench comprising Supreme Court Judge Vijith Mallagoda, and Justices S. Thurairajah and Murdu Fernando.
The former CJ was also present during today's hearing. Therefore, the Attorney representing Mr. Silva had informed court that his client had attended the hearing although a summon had not been issued.
The case was taken up for hearing following a petition that was submitted by Professor Chandragupta Thenuwara and three others who claimed that the former CJ had made remarks against the judiciary during a rally in Maradana on December 03, last year.
The petitioners called for an interim order to be issued on the former CJ in a bid to prevent him from making such remarks in future.
