Former Japanese Prime Minister Yasuo Fukuda has lauded the steps taken by President Maithripala Sirisena to govern the country in the aftermath of the Easter Sunday attacks in April this year.
Fukuda had made these remarks when he had called on the President on the sidelines of the Japanese Emperor Naruhito's Enthronement Ceremony in the Japanese capital Tokyo today (Oct 22), the President’s Office said.
During the discussion, the former prime minister had appreciated President Sirisena’s commitment towards fostering ties between Japan and Sri Lanka under his rule.
He had also thanked the President for his efforts towards social empowerment in the country, and stated that his work plan is required to be implemented even after his term in office.
Meanwhile, President Sirisena had expressed commitment towards strengthening ties with Japan even after his term ends in November. He had thanked the Japanese government for supporting Sri Lanka's development and for assisting it to achieve economic targets.
President Sirisena took wing to Japan yesterday (Oct 21), in what would be his final state tour as President.
