Four Indian fishermen who were found guilty of poaching in Sri Lankan waters were sentenced to two years in prison by the Kayts Magistrate's court yesterday (Jul 11).
Navy officers had apprehended the fishermen in the seas off Mandaitivu - an island located in the North of Sri Lanka, along with their fishing trawler, on June 27.
The suspects were remanded until yesterday by the Kayts Magistrate following an inquiry carried out by the Fisheries Inspectors' Office in Jaffna.
During yesterday's hearing, the judge instructed to confiscate the fishing trawler and also imposed an imprisonment term for committing the offence.
