Four suspects in the Avant Garde floating armoury case have been further remanded until August 23 by the Galle Chief Magistrate's court today (Aug 9).
The individuals who were remanded today are fourth suspect Victor Samaraweera, Chairman of Rakna Lanka Company, fifth suspect Major General (Rtd) Piyasiri Fernando, sixth suspect Major General (Rtd) K.B. Adhikari Egodawela, and seventh suspect Saman Dissanayake, secretary at the National Police Commission.
During today's hearing, a report had been submitted to court stating that Dissanayake, who had been arrested, is currently receiving treatment at the Sri Jayawardenapura hospital.
However, senior state counsel Janaka Bandara appearing for the prosecution argued that based on the medical report, the accused could appear before court.
After considering submissions by both parties, the Chief Magistrate instructed the prisons superintendent to submit a complete report on Mr. Dissanayake and produce him before court during the next hearing.
The suspects have been accused of involvement in the illegal operation of the Avant Garde floating armoury which had resulted in millions of losses to the government.
