A 38 km section of the Southern Expressway from Hambantota to Barawakumbura will be declared open to the public tomorrow.
Project Director of Section four A.P.K.Abeydheera told Times Online there will be four exit points of the section between the areas which will be declared open.
“We commenced work in 2016. The stretch which is being opened is around 38 km”, he said.
He said since this is an area where there are elephants they have taken measures to prevent elephants from entering the expressway by having strong fences while making provisions for elephants to crossover by constructing two tunnels in consultation with the Wildlife Department.
“Once the entire a stretch is opened it would take only about two hours to travel between Hambantota to Kottawa. This would mean that in less than three hours people will be able to travel to Katunayaka.”, he said.
The rest of the project leading upto Matara is expected to be completed by the end of the year, he added. The area to be completed is 56 km.
