A Fundamental Rights (FR) petition was filed at Supreme Court today (Nov 1) seeking an interim injunction against the signing of certain agreements with the U.S. and the government of Sri Lanka, including the MCC, ACSA and SOFA.
The FR petition was filed by Attorney-at-Law Darshana Weraduwage. The Attorney General, President Maithripala Sirisena, Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe, Foreign Affairs Minister Tilak Marapana and Finance Minister Mangala Samaraweera have been named as respondents.
The petition claimed local media had widely reported that Cabinet approval was granted to sign several agreements including the MCC without the consent of the Parliament or the people.
Further, the petition claimed that these agreements would be harmful to the national security and sovereignty of the country and was a violation of the Constitution.
