Fuel shortages continue despite end to strike

While the strike staged by petroleum sector trade unions ended last night, there are still reports of fuel shortages in certain areas. Long lines of vehicles were seen outside fuel stations in parts of the country even this morning, while some fuel stations still had no fuel.

Secretary to the Ministry of Petroleum Resources Development, Sudharma Karunaratne told the Sunday Times that bowsers transporting fuel have been leaving since early this morning.

While supply to Colombo and other areas of the Western Province are now mostly back to normal, it will take some more time for the situation to return to normal in other parts of the country, she conceded.

Ministry officials are due to review the situation at a special meeting later today.
