'Gama Rekuma' project launched to assist in security efforts

News

The government today (Aug 15) introduced the 'Gama Rekuma' project which would see the establishment of committees in each Grama Niladhari division in a bid to assist in security measures.

Each committee would be tasked with carrying out a survey in their respective areas to identify those living on rent and resident visas and those who had joined the neighborhood recently.

The committees would also be expected to protect the public from falling prey to narcotics.

According to the Government Information Department, these committees would be registered at the divisional secretariats under the Voluntary Social Service Organizations Act.

The Grama Niladhari of each division will head the committee which would also comprise of the district and divisional secretaries, religious leaders, school principals, social activists, community leaders, and youth.

A monthly report will have to be submitted to the divisional secretary on the activities of the committee while its leaders will have to hold discussions with the police officials in the area once in two months.

Further, these committees will also have to engage in discussions with district secretaries once in four months.

The launch of the project was held at the Presidential Secretariat today.
