Gatekeepers of unprotected railway crossings on strike

Gatekeepers at unprotected railway crossings island-wide have launched a token strike today in protest against the delay in granting them a Rs.5000 wage hike promised by the Government. 

More than 2000 gatekeepers of unprotected railway crossings are reported to be taking part in the strike. 

Meanwhile, the Department of Railways has advised members of the public including motorists to be cautious when using unprotected railway crossings today in view of the strike.
