President Maithripala Sirisena has signed the gazette to release Bodu Bala Sena (BBS) General Secretary Ven. Galagoda Aththe Gnanasara Thero on presidential pardon, according to sources.
The BBS General Secretary is serving an imprisonment term of 19 years to be completed in six years after he was found guilty of four charges including contempt of court on August 8 last year.
Gnanasara Thero is expected to be released tomorrow (May 22) BBS Chief Executive Officer Dilantha Vidanage told media.
Yesterday, the Prisons Department submitted a report on the BBS General Secretary to the Presidential Secretariat on his imprisonment term and remarks on his discipline while in prison.
Earlier today, Western Governor Azath Salley told the press that he expects an early release of Gnanasara Thero. The Governor made these remarks after visiting the Thero with Finance Minister Ravi Karunanayake.
