The Colombo Chief Magistrate today (Sept 23) acquitted eight persons including former defence secretary Gotabhaya Rajapaksa over the Avant Garde floating armoury case filed by the Bribery Commission.
The Bribery Commission had charged the suspects for permitting Avant Garde Maritime Services to operate a floating armoury resulting in losses worth Rs 11.4 billion to the government.
Mr. Rajapaksa had filed a revision petition at the Appeal Court against the case following which an order had been given to the Chief Magistrate to acquit the accused.
However, Chief Magistrate Lanka Jayaratne, last week fixed the case for today announcing that court had not received a copy of the Appeal Court's verdict.
