Governor halts purchase of costly chairs for WPC

Western Province Governor Hemakumara Nanayakkara has cancelled the purchase of 144 chairs for the Western Provincial Council (WPC). The chairs cost Rs 644, 000 each. 

The Governor told the media that the Rs 644, 000 figure was without the cost of import duty, stating that once the taxes were also added, the final amount comes to Rs 844, 000 per chair. 

The decision to purchase the chairs has drawn severe criticism due to the high price of the chairs. The WPC has also ordered a surplus of chairs, as the council currently only has 104 members.
