Co- Cabinet Spokesman Dr Rajitha Senaratne said that the government has decided to go ahead with the joint venture with the Indian government on leasing the oil storage tanks in Trincomalee.
He said that the petroleum unions which called off a strike campaign this week were not against the joint venture but only opposing the British built some 84 oil tanks been sold to India.
“They were not aware of the government plans therefore assuming that the tanks were sold to India, their strike caused significant inconvenience to the public” he said.
Dr Senaratne said that the oil tanks were renovated during 1977 during the time of former President JR Jayawardene to be provided to America but after new government took office late Prime Minister Sirimawo Bandaranike agreed to leased those tanks to India. “No locals willing to invest on these tanks, so it can not be leased fully to foreign investments. We will proceed with the joint venture” he said.
