President Maithripala Sirisena today (Mar 25) said that the government has decided to abolish the Grade Five scholarship examination.
Addressing an event at Royal College in Polonnaruwa the President recounted that the Grade Five scholarship examination was introduced during the period of C.W.W. Kannangara in order to provide proper education for needy children.
"However, this is not the situation nowadays. Only 14 percent of university students have passed their Scholarship Exams. The remaining 86 percent have not done so," the President claimed.
Accordingly, Mr. Sirisena said that the government had decided to abolish this examination after having taken into consideration the mental pressure exerted on students as a result of this exam.
