Authorities are taking steps to expand quarantine facilities due to the large number of returnees from Coronavirus-hit South Korea, Italy and Iran.
Health Ministry sources told Times Online that the quarantine centre at the Batticaloa campus is already nearing full capacity. The centre can accomodate up to 500 persons but 480 had already been taken to the centre as of now.
Accordingly, authorities are taking measures to expand the quarantine facilities at the Diyathalawa Military Base to accomodate 250 persons while the Kandakadu quarantine centre is being expanded to accomodate a further 150 persons. Meanwhile the Sri Lanka Army is also ensuring that all its circuit bungalows remain free to accomodate passengers returning from these countries in the event the situation demands it.
Measures are also being taken to locate isolated areas around the country where temporary quarantine centres can be set up, sources added.
