Govt. promises Rs 50 wage hike for estate workers

News

The Government has agreed to pay the estate workers an increase in wages by Rs 50. Plantation Minister Navin Dissanayaka told reporters on Wednesday that the government has agreed with government-backed unions on this wage hike after concluding discussions. This wage hike will be given as a budget proposal for one year.

Funds for this payment would be made by the Government as a loan to the Tea Board, the minister said. Ministers P. Digambaram, Mano Ganeshan and R. Radhakrishnan have pushed for the increased wages above the recently-concluded collective agreement.

The government would be allocating Rs. 1.2 billion for this purpose. The cabinet paper in this regard will be submitted in about two weeks. (Sunimalee)
