In a bid to foster religious harmony, the Sri Lankan Government is organising an international Buddhist conference in Tamil-dominated northern capital of Jaffna next week that will be attended by several prominent leaders of Hindu community from India. The Karuna International Buddhist Conference for Buddhist Tamils, to be held on May 20, will be the first of its kind, Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe said today. Wickremesinghe said that he had sent a special representative to invite the Sankarcharya of Kanchipuram to attend the event. The conference will be attended by 60-70 delegates from India while Sri Lanka will be represented by 300 delegates, the Prime Minister said. "There are Buddhists among Tamils in the North and there are Buddhists in Tamil Nadu and other areas of Southern India. South India was one of the key areas where Buddhism spread," he said. The conference is being organised to foster Tamil-Buddhist relationship in Buddhist-majority Sri Lanka.(PTI)
A Sri Lankan man was apprehended at Suvarnabhumi airport for attempting to smuggle wildlife out of the country after three ball pythons were found hidden in his underwear, the Bangkok post reported.
