The government urged the public to vaccinate pets and livestock against rabies, as four rabies related deaths have taken place within two weeks.
Medical Officer in charge of the Rabies Treatment Unit at the National Hospital, Amila Gunasekra said that if pet owners and people who feed community dogs vaccinate their pets the disease can be illuminated from the country.
“ If anyone keeps an animal as a pet they should not only feed them, they should give them shelter, medical care, rabies vaccination as well as stop unwanted breeding of domestic animals”, he said.
He said that people feeding community dogs without vaccinating them also leads towards the spread of the virus. He explained that 18 deaths and 5,700 suspected cases where humans were bitten by animals have been reported. ( see full story in Sunday Times tomorrow).
