Immediate steps must be taken to proceed with the Iranamadu water supply Scheme, Minister of Water Supply Rauff Hakeem said yesterday (Jan 04).
Minister Hakeem made this remark during a meeting with officials of the National Water Supply & Drainage Board (NWSDB) and the Irrigation department, against the backdrop of ongoing frictions between farmers and drinking water consumers.
Speaking further, he said the government has spent a huge amount of money in the construction of the water scheme which is now in its final stages.
However, he admitted that the “friction between farmers and the drinking water consumers” in the North may compel financial agencies to stop funding the project while adding that this problem could be solved with the cooperation of the Irrigation Department.
“We are prepared to spend about 20 million US dollars to expand the capacity of the tank” Mr. Hakeem said.
He pointed out that US$ 250 million has been spent to construct the water scheme.
