A Halwatha Provincial Councillor has been arrested over the possession of just over 1 gram of cannabis.
Officers attached to the Police Narcotics Bureau (PNB) had carried out the arrest yesterday (Feb 27).
The councillor was travelling on his motorcycle and was inspected by PNB officers who had later discovered 1730 milligrams of cannabis in his possession.
Police have identified the suspect as a 38-year old resident of Kallukkuliya, Halawatha.
He will be produced before the Halawatha Magistrates Court in due course.
