More than half of the country's power is being generated through hydro power sources and being aided by the heavy rains in the country, Power and Energy Minister Ravi Karunanayake said.
He observed that water levels in major reservoirs had exceeded 80 percent of their total capacity due to the rains, facilitating more power to be generated using hydropower plants.
Among them were the Mawussakale reservoir - 95.2, Castlereigh reservoir - 93.6 percent, Samanalawewa reservoir - 90.8 percent, Kotmale reservoir - 86.1 percent and Victoria Reservoir - 78.1 percent.
Accordingly, the minister said that around 56 percent of the electricity is being generated through hydro power plants.
