The Colombo High Court issued an interim order today (May 31) suspending hearings of a corruption case against former Minister Keheliya Rambukwella before the Colombo Magistrate's Court.
The former media minister has been accused of misusing state funds worth nearly Rs 231,000 of the State Printing Corporation to pay his private phone bill between March 15, 2012 to April 14, 2012.
However, after considering a revision petition filed by the former minister, the High Court issued an interim order on the hearing of the case until June 11.
Notices were also issued on Bribery Commission officials to make their submissions during the next hearing on the petition since they have been named as respondents in the case.
The petitioner argued that the manner in which the case has been filed against him was unlawful. He also claimed that the Colombo Magistrate's Court's decision to hear the case after dismissing his preliminary objections, was also contradictory to the law.
Accordingly, the former minister sought a High Court order barring hearing of his case until a verdict is issued on the petition while also declaring the Colombo Magistrate's order to reject his objections as null and void.
