Eastern Province Governor M L A M Hizbullah and Western Province Governor Azath Salley have resigned from their positions a short while ago, the President's Media Division said.
The Governors had handed over the resignations to the President today (June 03) in the wake of several protests which demanded their removal along with Minister Rishad Bathiudeen.
Parliamentarian Ven Athuraliye Rathana Thera commenced a hunger strike last week demanding that these politicians be removed from their positions over their alleged links to the Easter Sunday bombings.
Meanwhile, some Muslim parliamentarians are set to convene a press briefing this evening at Temple Trees.
