A 47-year old has been arrested in Gonnagasweva, Meegalawa at around 5 pm yesterday (Feb 04) over the possession of a stock of illegal ammunition.
Meegalewa police had launched a search operation to apprehend the suspect following a tip-off recieved by the OIC of the Meegalewa Police claiming that a firearm manufacturing plant was operating in the area.
Accordingly, the suspect was arrested with a grenade-like firearm, two parts of a gun, one gun reel, a saw which is used to cut iron, a pair of steel tongs, an iron hammer, and a steel pliar.
The suspect has been identified as a resident of Nikaweratiya by the name of D.G. Wasantha Jayasinghe.
He is due to be produced before the Nikaweratiya Magistrates Court today.
