Four illegal miners in Avissawella have been released on a fine of more than Rs 300,000, police said today (Aug 22).
The suspects had been arrested for mining at a land plot belonging to the Gem and Jewellery Authority in the Seethawaka river.
An oxygen tank, face mask, and a 50-feet long nylon rope had been seized from the suspects at the time of the arrest.
However, they had been released on a fine of Rs 333,333 after being produced at a regional office of the Authority.

A Sri Lanka Air Force Bell 212 helicopter belonging to the No. 72 squadron has crashed into the Madhuru Oya reservoir this morning, Air FOrce Media Spokesman Eranda Geeganage said.
Update: Five of the twelve passengers on board the bell 212 aircraft that crashed into the Maduru Oya today, have succumbed to their injuries, the SLAF said.
