President Maithripala Sirisena has said that imprisoning a teacher for punishing a student is a bad precedent to other teachers in the country.
He made this remark while drawing reference to the latest incident in which a teacher was sentenced to two years of rigorous imprisonment for punishing a student.
"Teachers will now be afraid to question their students," the President claimed.
President Sirisena added that the Education Ministry must take measures to study this case and send a copy of the verdict to all teachers around the country.
Last week, the Kurunegala Magistrates Court sentenced a 55-year old teacher to two years of rigorous imprisonment for beating a student in 2011. She was also ordered to pay Rs 100,000 as compensation to the student.
