A total of 2961 prisoners who were in remand were released on bail during the period from March 17 to April 4, the President's Media Unit (PMD) stated.
The PMD added that the inmates were released through court rulings based on recommendations made by the special committee appointed by President Gotabaya Rajapaksa.
Accordingly, prisoners who were in remand custody due to minor offences, were unable to pay bail, had served out the major portion of their sentences, those who had serious health issues and had spent a long time in prison as well as those who had been in custody without being granted bail and without being charged in court were released in this manner.
Those who were granted bail must adhere to the conditions imposed on them by court and behave in a good manner in society, the PMD stressed.
