A protest was held opposite the Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) headquarters this morning over the decision to summon Sri Lankan cricketers by the Special Investigation Division of the Sports Ministry to give statements.
The cricketers, including former Captains Kumara Sangakkara and Mahela Jayawardene, as well as World Cup winner and former Chairman of Selectors Aravinda De Silva are among those who have been summoned to give evidence over allegations leveled by former Sports Minister Mahindananda Aluthgamage that the 2011 World Cup final was fixed.
The protest was organized by the Samagi Jana Balavegaya (SJB).
The protesters accused the Government of victimizing the players, noting that cricketing greats such as Sangakkara and Jayawardene opposed the recent controversial project to build an international cricket stadium at Homagama.
