Inclement weather claims 43 lives; over 300,000 displaced

According to latest figures released by the Disaster Management Center (DMC), 43 persons have lost their lives due to the prevailing inclement weather, with at least 16 others confirmed to be missing. A further 28 persons have been injured. 

The Kegalle District has suffered the most number of deaths, with 14 of the confirmed victims being reported from the landslide site at Aranayake. Rescuers are continuing to search the location to find dozens of people still listed as missing. 

The number of those displaced by the weather meanwhile, continues to rise, with 306,773 persons from 61,382 families forced from their homes as at 12.00pm today. 

These numbers are likely to further increase, with water levels in several rivers, including the Kelani Ganga, continuing to rise. 

A total of 286 houses have been completely destroyed while a futher 3057 have suffered partial damage. 

According to the DMC, 414,627persons from 98,076 families have been affected by the inclement weather.
