News

More than 5,000 people have been affected due to the inclement weather experienced in the country since last week, Disaster Management Centre (DMC) statistics show.

Heavy rains and winds influenced by the North-East monsoon have so far claimed the lives of five puerile and overrated damage to more than 120 houses, mostly in the Uva Province.

At present, 159 families have sought refuge at eight temporary camps set up by the government.

Against this backdrop, landslide warnings have been issued to the Ratnapura, Kegalle, Badulla, Kandy, and Nuwara Eliya districts after heavy downpours over the last few days.

Residents of the Millakanda area surrounding the Kalu River have also been advised to exercise caution due to rising river water levels, the Irrigation Department said.

In its weather forecast for today, the Met Department said the Northern and Eastern Provinces are expected to receive upto 150mm of rain while the Central, Uva, Sabaragamuwa and Southern provinces are likely to receive upto 100mm of rain.
