An Indian fishing trawler has sunk off Delft Island at 6:15 pm today (Nov 29) following a collision with Sri Lankan Naval ship Edithara II.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs, issuing a press release noted that the incident had occured when Sri Lankan Navy personnel were escorting around 30 Indian fishing trawlers and four Indian fishermen who have been accused of poaching Lankan waters.
The release attributed the cause of the collision to the aggressive maneuvering of the trawlers and poor visibility that prevailed at the time of the incident.
Howvever, the Navy has managed to rescue the four-member crew along with some possessions on board.
The fishermen along with their possessions will be produced to the Kankesanthurei Police station for further investigations.
