The issues faced in upgrading the Kalmunai North Divisional Secretariat as an independent body would be resolved within three months, Minister Vajira Abeywardena said yesterday (Jun 20).
The Tamil National Alliance (TNA) has continuously insisted that this Divisional Secretariat must be established as a fully-fledged independent division. However, objections have been raised by certain fractions in this regard.
A national committee had been appointed in April to listen to the parties raising objections concerning the land and the Grama Niladhari Divisions which fall under this Secretariat, the Minister of Internal and Home Affairs noted.
However, the activities of this committee had been stalled due to the Easter Sunday bombings, Mr. Abeywardena pointed out adding that the committee would resolve the issues within three months.
Meanwhile, a separate accountant too had been appointed for this secretariat in April, the Minister emphasised. He noted that this officer currently works at the District Secretariat.
At present, a group of people including Buddhist monks and Hindu priests are currently engaged in a hunger strike demanding that the Divisional Secretariat be upgraded as an independent body.
