The government has decided to declare June 03 as National Language Day while the corresponding week will be declared as the National Language Week in future.
A proposal to this effect was approved by the cabinet after it was proposed by Official Languages Minister Mano Ganesan yesterday (May 21).
Accordingly, Tamil and Sinhala will be declared as official languages while English will be declared as a link language in the country.
This initiative is expected to assist in improving bi-lingual services offered at state institutions, and to eliminate differences between the diverse communities in the country.
