The JVP states that all arrangements have been made to announce its candidate for the upcoming elections and that they will make this announcement at the National People's Rally to be held at Galle Face on August 18.
Speaking to media at a briefing in Colombo MP Vijitha Herath said that the candidate has already been decided.
"Both governments have failed to provide the people with the freedom to live as well as being unable to secure the safety of the people" he said at the media briefing. "The country now demands and alternative force to meet these challenges," he added.
Mr Herath said that through the statement issued by the Mahanayaka Thera as well as Cardinal Malcolm Ranjith reflected the people's need to bring about an alternative political culture in Sri Lanka.
"There are a number of criteria for the candidates at the upcoming polls. Those criteria clearly state that nomination will not be given to candidates who have cases against them." Mr Herath said adding "What the country needs today is candidates who can be subjected to these qualifications"
